The label says

Every 6 hours – dose times

4times a day

  1. 7:00 am
  2. 1:00 pm
  3. 7:00 pm
  4. 1:00 amwhile you sleep
  • Between doses6 h

One dose falls while you sleep. Ask your pharmacist whether it has to be exactly every 6 hours or can be spread over your waking hours.

The first dose is set to the time that keeps the most doses in your waking hours. Change it if your label says otherwise.

Every N hours in times a day

Doses a day = 24 ÷ hours between doses.

  • Every 4 hours = 6 times a day
  • Every 6 hours = 4 times a day
  • Every 8 hours = 3 times a day
  • Every 12 hours = 2 times a day
  • Every 24 hours = once a day

"Every 6 hours" asks for even spacing around the clock, so with four doses one of them often lands late in the evening or at night. "4 times a day" on the other hand is usually spread over your waking hours. The two are not always interchangeable – the package leaflet says which one your medicine needs, and your pharmacist can confirm it.

"Every 4–6 hours as needed"

On pain or fever medicines this is a minimum gap and the label also states a maximum number of doses in 24 hours. The calculator shows the most doses the interval allows; it is not a target. Stay within the maximum on the label.

Frequently asked questions

Every 6 hours is how many times a day?

Four times in 24 hours – for example 6:00, 12:00, 18:00 and 24:00, or shifted to start when you wake up.

Is every 8 hours the same as 3 times a day?

Not always. Every 8 hours means even spacing around the clock; 3 times a day is often spread over waking hours. The leaflet or your pharmacist will tell you which your medicine needs.

Do I have to wake up at night for every 6 hours?

Shifting the first dose often helps. If a night dose still remains, ask your pharmacist whether it is really needed for your medicine.
